Children who require exceptional assistance find it very challenging to learn under normal school environments. Without help, they may not succeed and get the best out of their abilities. This makes it important for parents of such children to seek the assistance of an advocate for special education that can help address their needs. Below are some qualities one should look for when choosing such a professional.

Ensure the individual you choose is well trained in special education and advocacy. Most of these people are actually not attorneys although some may be supervised by lawyers. However, others also practice independently. Nevertheless, the most important thing is to ensure that they have the right training. A reliable expert should get updated training and knowledge through conferences, workshops, and continuing learning programs.

Next, you should consider experience. You need someone who has practiced in this field for a long time. Being a lawyer does not count as experience as you need someone who is well versed in special education advocacy. Therefore, ensure that this is the specialty they have been in for at least the last five years. This can give assurance that they have what it takes to understand various disabilities and manage evaluations and IEPs.

Choose someone who understands the IEP process. Children with special needs need to be assisted with Individualized Education Programs, as their eligibility must be established before enrolling. An expert who understands the requirements will also assist in addressing discipline matters and overseeing mediation and administrative hearings. This will ensure that their clients get better school services without experiencing major challenges.

There should be a good rapport between the child and the advocate right from the start. This requires an in-depth understanding of the disability so that they can understand the client well. The ideas they suggest should be based on research-based and peer-reviewed materials.

One should have the ability to reduce existing barriers between the school and the parent. The goal of any advocate should be to bring these two parties together. They should make the parent understand the IEP Team process so that negotiations can always take place without major disagreements.

Check the listening skills. A professional advocate should be a good listener. This will help in understanding the needs of the child and comprehending the challenges facing different parties. Without the ability to pay attention to what others have to say, the professional may miss important points.

Choose a good negotiator. The art of negotiation is very essential in advocacy, and without it, very little will be achieved. Successful negotiations ensure that everyone comes out of the meetings feeling successful.

A good understanding of the law is also very important. Sometimes, matters can go to court and understanding of the general and special education law is very important. It is similarly important to understand related laws such as Department of Health regulations that address the needs of learners.

Talk about the fees. You may find advocate for special education that does not charge, but others do. Nevertheless, you should be able to afford the charges comfortably.
