Obama May Invoke Exec. Order In Gun Control Push

The discussion over the right to own guns is the most popular topic today, coast to coast. Gun buyers are heating up sales, fearing that they may not be able to purchase them later on. President Obama is thinking about using his executive order opportunity to push 19 different firearm control actions through, should they not pass Congress. The Countrywide Rifle Association is attempting to block the administration. It is an organization that some believe is associated with the country's firearm sector, which generates $12 billion yearly.

Possible gun control measures

About 40 percent of all gun sales have no background checks, according to Brady Campaign to Prevent Firearm Violence. This is because they are sold through private sellers and at gun shows. The FBI explained that there were 10,037,110 background checks done when looking at selling guns in 2011, though that was not enough.

With President Obama thinking about many actions for guns, there are a ton of things to consider. He would like to do away with importing guns from overseas and would like to make sure mental health records are better kept on the subject of selling guns. He wants more penalties for people who traffic in guns and those who lie on background checks as well.

The president also wants to do away with high-capacity clips and assault weapons. Still, Congress is unlikely to agree with him.

Support of guns

Firearm supporters are speaking out vehemently against the Administration's push, from grass roots to the top political players in the nation. Some say they will wage civil war if the administration goes after their weapons. Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, has vowed a move to impeach President Obama if he takes executive order on any of the actions.

Stockman said that the move would be unconstitutional, adding that he "will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary."

Formal stance of NRA

The Newton mass shooting tragedy is what caused all the interest in guns. The Countrywide Rifle Association states it is definitely a better idea to put armed guards in schools and look more closely at video game violence before saying goodbye to guns. It is one of the most powerful lobbies in Washington D.C., and it has a ton of influence. It opposes the efforts.

The NRA claims that its reason is to protect the second amendment rights of American citizens, and that it has no ties to the gun market. However, a recent comprehensive Huffington Post piece by Peter Dreier questions that with some pretty compelling data. The article indicated that the NRA's interest has always favored the firearm market over its rank-and-file contributing members.

Dreier said: "The NRA is ... primarily a corporate lobby group working on behalf of the gun and ammo manufacturers, similar to the trade associations that represent car manufacturers ... and other industries. All of them claim to do what's best for the consumers of their products ... but everyone knows that they primarily serve the interests of the corporations who fund and govern them."
