Trying to find non-partisan political information is becoming harder and harder each day. Between what partisan politicians are saying and what the news media decides to print or broadcast, it is difficult for people who want to know what is going on. The endangered species that is fact is disappearing faster than many of the animals that are actually on that list, which is also extremely partisan.
The large news agencies used to safeguard their reputations by making sure their hard news items, such as what was happening in the political field, were backed up by facts. This was made easier by having a commentary section where they could exercise their tin hat thoughts in a way that did not distract from their main purpose. The two of these sections have merged over the last 30 years.
By only being informed by the thoughts and beliefs of one party and mimicking the other party, the press does not present informative news. The departure from the hard questions creates a media that will support one party over another, regardless of issue. Many people do like this type of partisan reporting and way of looking at things, however, it leaves others wanting true non-partisan political information.
Most party politics are conducted in ways that do not present anything other heat, not light, when exposed in debates. Giving one side of an issue as being an emotional response to something that is being considered will attract many of the low information voters. This is capitalized upon by the media and taken forward based on the emotions of the day.
Many people appreciate the highly partisan rhetoric that is confused as political debates. Many of them need the comfort that they have it right, regardless of whether or not it is. A lot of these individuals do not want to get it right, they just want their believes, fears and or opinions supported in some way and this makes them feel good.
The almost total absence of common sense facts about gun ownership and crime is a good example. In cities where this second amendment right is actually infringed upon, gun violence is very high. The politicians who have the eyes and ears of the press will tell us all that this is not true. The same politicians who ignore these facts will also emotionalize many other things.
The political maneuvering around the issue of immigration is also lacking in facts. One side will tell everyone that all immigrants must be allowed in and, therefore, the laws do not mean what they say they mean. The other side will point out that legal and illegal do mean different things. They stand for the rule of law, however, none of this gets past the emotional reports about this issue.
No amount of non-partisan political information will counter the partisan stuff that is put out on the airwaves and print media. This is unfortunate as many people will always act in ways that are appropriate if they have the facts. This situation will not get any better until those people stand up and say that there has been enough of this. They must demand that politicians either tell the truth or stay home.
