John Kerry, US Secretary of State, made six trips to the Middle East since he was installed. Many Arab nations in the area have animosity towards Israel. It is always the case that current US foreign policy in the Middle East affects those nations. Kerry worked to arrange peace discussions between the leaders of Israel and Palestine. He has been successful and they met for a talk in Washington.

Other nations are significantly affected by the powerful US. Everyone professes to wanting peace. It is complicated to sort out conditions and policies that make agreements difficult. It is especially difficult for the Palestinian and Jewish populations due to both laying claim to old Jerusalem.

President Obama phoned Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to thank each of them personally for once again opening negotiations between the two governments. He met in person with them prior to the phone call. Further discussions are planned between the two. They are to meet over a nine-month period. Future meetings will take place either in Israel or Palestine.

The leaders agreeing to reopen negotiations are Mahmoud Abbas, who has been President of the National Palestinian Authority since 2004. The respected statesman was made President of the State of Palestine in 2008.

Benjamin Netanyahu fills an important role in the peace talks. His leadership roles include Foreign Affairs Minister and or course, Prime Minister. His service to his country covers a span including most of his adult life.

There is one more dignified leader who is not as actively involved as he would wish. President Shimon Peres has served his country in one capacity or another for 65 years. This 90 year old politician has seen numerous wars and repeated peace negotiations.

World corporations depend on the US to set standards that are beneficial to all. The other diplomats that John Kerry carries on diplomatic relations with are usually called by the title of foreign minister. It is however, the equivalent to the title Kerry holds, which is Secretary of State. In the event that a disagreement between Kerry and President Obama regarding diplomatic relations, President Obama will make final decisions.

Officially, the foreign policy in the US is to promote a prosperous and safe democratic nation for the benefit of all Americans. With a $15 trillion economy and a $711 billion defense budget, it is no wonder the US has the status of being the strongest influence in world politics. An additional intent of the US government is to benefit the international economy.

There is a committee that is responsible for putting controls on exports. It is the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Much attention is also paid to those countries who advance nuclear technology. It is also important job to make decisions on which countries to give financial assistance to. There is often hot debate on recipients and amounts of foreign aid.

The current US foreign policy in the Middle East is intended to be fair and objective when dealing with friendly countries and some that are not so friendly. Secretary of State Kerry has furthered the cause of peace in his relatively short time in office. Most significantly between Israel and Palestine.
